TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan High Court overturned a decision to release KMT Taipei Chair Huang Lu Chin-ju (黃呂錦茹) without bail, and scheduled a second detention hearing for Friday morning.
Prosecutors appealed Taipei District Court’s Saturday decision to release Huang on Wednesday. The high court ruled on Thursday that the reasoning for releasing Huang was inconsistent with the evidence gathered by prosecutors, per CNA.
The high court said evidence included witness testimonies, lists of signatures, and conversation records, which indicated she may have been involved in criminal acts. It said the district court must reconsider its original ruling that released her because there was insufficient evidence to suspect her of criminal wrongdoing.
Prosecutors detained two KMT Taipei office staffers incommunicado for two months when Huang and one other staffer were released. The pair were detained under suspicion of fraudulently gathering signatures for recall campaigns against DPP Legislators Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) and Wu Pei-yi (吳沛憶).
Huang and the three staffers have denied wrongdoing. The KMT responded to the investigation with accusations of political bias and plan a protest against the government on Saturday.
