TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced deadlines in May and June for the second stage of recalls targeting 50 legislators across Taiwan.
Deadlines for recalls against Kuomintang (KMT) legislators will fall between early and late May. The earliest deadline is May 2 for Legislator Huang Chien-pin (黃建賓), and the latest is May 23 for Legislator Lin Pei-hsiang (林沛祥), per CNA.
Deadlines for recalls against Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislators will fall between late May and June. The earliest is May 31 for Legislators Asenay Daliyalrep (陳瑩) and Saidhai Tahovecahe (伍麗華), while the latest is June 24 for Legislator Chen Chun-yu (陳俊宇).
The recall process is divided into three stages: proposal, petition, and voting. During the second phase, petitioners must collect signatures from at least 10% of eligible voters within 60 days.
If all requirements are met during verification, the CEC will declare the recall case established, and the case will move to the voting stage. Voting must take place between 20 and 60 days after the case is established.
A recall is passed if the number of votes in favor exceeds the number against, and if the number of votes in favor surpasses one-fourth of the total eligible voters in the constituency.
If a recall is successful, the official will be removed from office and barred from running for the same position in the same district for four years. If the recall fails, no new recall can be proposed against the same official during the current term.
The signature collection period for the recall case against suspended Taiwan People's Party (TPP) Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安) will end on May 4.
For DPP municipal and county councilors, the second stage of the recall against Nantou County Councilors Tsai Ming-hsuan (蔡銘軒) and Cheng Yu-ling (陳玉鈴) ended on April 14, with a list of signatories submitted to the local election commission.
The signature deadlines for other recalls are June 2 for Miaoli County Councilors Hsu Hsia-ching (徐筱菁), Chen Chun-nuan (陳春暖), and Tseng Wen-hsueh (曾玟學); June 3 for Keelung City Councilors Cheng Wen-ting (鄭文婷) and Chang Jiho (張之豪); and June 21 for New Taipei City Councilor Chen Nai-yu (陳乃瑜).
