TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A court approved the detention of the secretary-general of the Kuomintang’s New Taipei chapter, Chen Chen-jung (陳貞容), on Tuesday over forgery allegations in a recall campaign.
KMT branches in several cities have been raided and investigated after accusations that officials submitted signatures by dead people in recalls targeting Democratic Progressive Party legislators. In New Taipei, prosecutors first searched KMT offices in the Sanchong and Banqiao districts before turning to the main chapter office and the homes of two officials, the Liberty Times reported.
Following questioning starting Monday, three opposition party staff members were allowed to return home, but prosecutors asked a court to keep Chen detained. In a session that lasted about an hour on Tuesday, the court agreed to the prosecutors’ request.
The alleged forgeries in New Taipei targeted four DPP lawmakers. They included the signatures of individuals who had not signed the recall documents, duplicates, and the signatures of deceased people. In the most obvious cases, several recall documents featured similar handwriting.
