TAIPEI (Taiwan News)— A delegation of Taiwanese lawmakers arrived in Washington, DC on Tuesday for legislative exchanges with their US counterparts.
DPP legislator and delegation leader Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) said he would highlight Taiwan’s increased defense spending to exceed 3% of GDP, CNA reported. Regarding tariffs, Wang said that Taiwan-US cooperation is mutually beneficial and he hoped this visit will help facilitate progress in trade negotiations. He added that Taiwan remains unified in safeguarding national interests.
Wang also hoped the US would continue to provide Taiwan with sufficient defensive weapons and expedite their delivery.
Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) and fellow KMT legislators Chang Chih-lun (張智倫) and Huang Chien-hao (黃健豪), along with TPP Legislator Lin Yi-chun (林憶君), and DPP legislators Chiu Yi-ying (邱議瑩) and Ngalim Tiunn (張雅琳), are accompanying Wang. The group already visited the Hudson Institute and the National Association of Manufacturers, per CNA.
The lawmakers will later meet with members of congressional committees on intelligence, foreign affairs, and defense, as well as the Heritage Foundation and other agencies.
