TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) welcomed a visiting delegation from the Atlantic Council on Friday, emphasizing Taiwan’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the US.
In his remarks, Lai outlined a roadmap for strengthening bilateral trade, lowering tariffs, and expanding Taiwan’s investment in the US under a “Taiwan plus America” strategy, per a press release.
Addressing regional security, Lai reaffirmed Taiwan’s resolve to defend itself against China, per CNA. He announced plans to increase Taiwan’s defense budget from 2.5% to over 3% of GDP.
On trade, Lai reiterated Taiwan’s belief in fair, free, and mutually beneficial economic relations. The president also promoted a non-red supply chain, strengthening US-Taiwan economic ties while reducing reliance on China.
Matthew Kroenig, vice president of the Atlantic Council, praised Taiwan’s leadership and resilience, adding the US remains a reliable partner. He highlighted the Trump administration’s record defense budget and stressed that Taiwan’s security and stability are vital not only for itself but for the US and the world.
Kroenig added that the Atlantic Council pledged to cooperate with Taiwan through research, visits, and public engagement.
The Atlantic Council is a US think tank founded in 1961.
