TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan at 6:53 p.m. on Monday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
The epicenter was located 33.7 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 6.6 kilometers, the CWA said. It followed a magnitude 5.5 quake that occurred at 6:09 p.m., 34.9 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien County Hall at a depth of 6.1 kilometers.
Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7 to measure how strongly a quake is felt at a specific location. The 5.9 quake registered an intensity level of 4 in Hualien County.
A level 3 was recorded in Yilan County, Taichung, Nantou County, Yunlin County, and Changhua County. Level 2 was reported in Taitung County, Miaoli County, Chiayi County, Hsinchu County, New Taipei, Chiayi, Tainan, Keelung, and Kaohsiung.
An intensity level of 1 was measured in Taoyuan, Taipei, Hsinchu, Pingtung County, and Penghu County.
