TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Veterans General Hospital said that it has adopted AI to assist nurses with their duties within the hospital.
The hospital said that Taiwan's entry into a super-aged society this year, along with declining birth rates and nursing staff shortage, could increase nurse workloads. It said adopting technology could help alleviate this burden and contribute to enhanced patient safety and more precise care, per CNA.
Taipei Veterans General Hospital Nursing Department Deputy Director Hung Shih-hsin (洪世欣) said that nurses at the facility spend an average of 7.5 minutes documenting each patient record, including assessments, care measures, and observations. To address this, the hospital has introduced TVGH Brain, its large language model, which offers AI-driven support for documentation tasks.
Hung said the AI system can automatically access patient examination and test results, generating case records in 30 seconds to one minute. This significantly streamlines data retrieval. She added that the system operates on an internal cloud infrastructure developed by the hospital, ensuring patient data security.
Since last year, the hospital has equipped its nursing staff with smart devices, allowing them to complete documentation using speech recognition technology. The devices are designed to recognize medical terminology, reducing the need for typing. They also feature multilingual support and real-time translation capabilities.
Additionally, the hospital's IT department upgraded its smart infusion pump system to assist in preparing and giving chemotherapy medications to cancer patients. This enhancement reduces the time needed to verify drug dosages, the hospital said.
Lastly, the facility developed a nursing guidance system that includes information on 181 diseases and 867 health education resources. The hospital added that the system helps nurses quickly understand patients’ physical and psychological conditions.
