TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei City Government said Wednesday the city’s public sports centers will remain open during the World Masters Games.
The World Masters Games will be held in Greater Taipei from May 17-30. This year’s event is expected to draw 25,000 athletes from Taiwan and abroad, making it the third-largest participation in the history of the competition.
The city’s sports department said that public sports centers in Zhonghe, Sanchong, and Banqiao Districts will be used by the event organizers for basketball competitions. The facility in Xindian will host volleyball, while the venue in Luzhou will host handball, per CNA.
According to the department, the city has 16 large public sports centers, two aquatic sports centers, and 13 gyms. It noted that most of the large facilities are equipped with swimming pools, table tennis rooms, climbing walls, badminton courts, and fitness centers.
The department said the city government plans to build additional large sports centers in districts with populations exceeding 250,000. It added that the second facilities in Banqiao and Luzhou are under construction and are expected to be completed next year.
The city government will also establish second sports centers in Xinzhuang and Sanchong Districts, the department said. The Xinzhuang center will include an indoor rowing training facility, while the Sanchong center will feature a fencing room.
Participants in the World Masters Games can use the fitness centers and swimming pools at the city’s public sports centers for free with their event credentials, the department added.
