TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Prosecutors requested the detention of KMT Keelung office committee chair Wu Guo-sheng (吳國勝) on suspicion of fraud in recall campaigns.
The Keelung District Prosecutors' Office is investigating Keelung KMT officials who are accused of accessing a household registration system to forge signatures used in recall campaigns targeting DPP City Councilors Cheng Wen-ting (鄭文婷) and Chang Ji-ho (張之豪), per CNA. Prosecutors searched the Keelung office twice on Wednesday, and Wu was summoned as a suspect.
Prosecutors also searched the Keelung office and questioned Wu as a witness in late April. After another interrogation on Wednesday, prosecutors listed Wu as a defendant.
They requested court approval to detain him and prohibit visitors, citing the risk of collusion and destruction of evidence. Wu's bail was set at NT$300,000 (US$9,910).
Prosecutors accessed the WeChat group established by Wu for the recall campaign. The group included Keelung Department of Civil Affairs Director Chang Yuan-hsiang (張淵翔), who was detained earlier in connection with the investigation. They also collected surveillance footage, party member lists, party meeting materials, and annual party dues collected by the headquarters.
In addition, former Keelung KMT Deputy Secretary-General Han Ji-yuan (韓吉元) was interrogated and had bail set at NT$100,000. Speaking to reporters, he denied wrongdoing outside the prosecutors’ office on Wednesday.
