TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Minnesota Legislature unanimously passed a pro-Taiwan resolution on Monday for the fourth consecutive year.
The resolution reaffirmed Minnesota’s commitment to strengthening sister ties with Taiwan. It also backed a Taiwan-US bilateral trade agreement and a double taxation avoidance agreement.
The legislature called for closer economic and trade ties between Minnesota and Taiwan and supported Taiwan's participation in international organizations, including the UN, WHO, and ICAO. It also endorsed Taiwan's desire to contribute more to the global community.
The resolution pointed out that Taiwan shares the same values of freedom and democracy with the US and Minnesota. It added that Taiwan was Minnesota's ninth-largest export market in 2024, with US$644 million (NT$19.52 billion) worth of goods exported to Taiwan, such as
medical equipment and machinery needed for semiconductor production.
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago Director Dennis Lei (類延峰) welcomed the resolution, saying it signals strong interest among Midwestern states in signing bilateral trade agreements with Taiwan. Cooperation between Minnesota and Taiwan continues to grow across agriculture, manufacturing, and high-tech supply chains, he added.
Minnesota and Taiwan established sister-state ties in 1984.
