TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Out of more than 370,000 civil servants under review, two were found to hold Chinese passports and 75 had Chinese residency documents, the Mainland Affairs Council said Friday.
The Cabinet launched a review of military personnel, teachers, and government employees after several Chinese spouses had voiced support for Chinese military action against Taiwan.
The first phase of the review turned up 373,821 people who were required to provide proof they had renounced Chinese household documents, the Liberty Times reported. If unable to provide immediate proof, they were allowed to submit affidavits testifying they did not hold Chinese documents.
Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (邱垂正) said 371,203 or 99.3% of those required to file affidavits had done so. The council would assist the two who held Chinese passports and the 75 with residency documents to complete the renunciation procedure, he added.
According to the law, dual Taiwanese and Chinese nationality is not possible. As a result, holders of Chinese citizenship will lose their Taiwan passport and not be allowed to serve in the military or work as a teacher or at a government body.
