TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Michigan House of Representatives passed a unanimous bipartisan resolution on Saturday, following a similar move by the state Senate last week.
The legislation was introduced by Taiwan Friendship Caucus co-chairs Jason Morgan, Jaime Greene, Kelly Breen, and Sharon MacDonell, with backing from six other lawmakers, per CNA.
Citing shared democratic values and strong bilateral trade, especially in agriculture, the House called for progress on a US-Taiwan tax agreement and support for initiatives like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity.
It also called on Washington to support Taiwan’s international participation under the name “Taiwan” and to continue arms sales for self-defense.
Taiwan’s representative in Chicago, Lei Yen-feng (類延峰), attended a previous House session and voiced optimism about expanding ties with the Midwest. He urged US lawmakers to reject China’s interpretation of UN Resolution 2758 and reaffirmed Taiwan’s readiness to deepen cooperation.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who has visited Taiwan twice, opened a Michigan office in Taipei last year. Her administration has signed several memoranda of understanding with Taiwanese officials, including President Lai Ching-te (賴清德).
