TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Tainan City Government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Taiwan Creative Content Agency on Monday, aiming to establish the city as a cultural content hub.
Through the partnership, the agency will encourage both domestic and international companies to collaborate with local startups, while supporting projects through script development, business showcases, and global investment connections. The initiative seeks to attract broader funding and commercial opportunities to Tainan’s expanding audiovisual sector, according to the Tainan City Government.
Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) emphasized the city’s historical and cultural significance as Taiwan’s oldest urban settlement, noting its potential as fertile ground for content development. He expressed confidence that the collaboration will revitalize Tainan’s historic gates, temples, and alleyways through modern storytelling formats such as film, animation, and digital media.
Tainan marked its 400th anniversary last year, traced back to 1624 when the Dutch first landed in the area. The city has since experienced five distinct historical eras, including the Dutch period, Ming-Zheng rule, the Qing dynasty, Japanese colonial rule, and postwar Taiwan, each contributing to its rich cultural, architectural, and urban heritage, per Taisugar.
Huang pointed to Tainan’s growing role in the nation’s creative industries, citing the city’s successful hosting of last year’s Creative Expo Taiwan. He also noted its popularity as a filming location for acclaimed productions such as Seqalu: Formosa 1867, Zone Pro Site, and Someday or One Day.
Established in 2019 under the Ministry of Culture, the Taiwan Creative Content Agency is a government-affiliated institute dedicated to strengthening the content industry through the integration of public and private sector resources. It provides support across a wide range of fields, including film, television, music, publishing, animation, comics, gaming, visual and technological arts, performing arts, and fashion.
Agency Chair Homme Tsai (蔡嘉駿) said the partnership will merge Tainan’s cultural energy with national-level resources to produce influential content and stimulate the creative economy. Huang added that with the agency's involvement, he hopes to see Tainan’s local creativity translated into cultural works with global resonance.
