TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan is tightening oversight of e-commerce platforms to guard against the dumping of Chinese goods after US tariffs sparked fears of origin washing.
Origin washing refers to the illegal shipment of dumped goods through other countries. The Ministry of Digital Affairs said on Tuesday that while no dumping has been detected so far, platforms are stepping up oversight and remain on alert for suspicious activity, per CNA.
The ministry’s Administration for Digital Industries met with platforms including Shopee, momo, PChome, Yahoo Shopping, Rakuten Taiwan, and others on April 25 to address potential unfair trade practices, per a press release. Discussions centered on low-price imports, false origin labeling, and supply chain transparency, per UDN.
Platform representatives expressed support for government policy and pledged to prevent illicit trade. Most already require certificates of origin and have systems in place to flag suspect listings.
To promote trustworthy e-commerce, the administration launched the “Friendly E-commerce” awards last year, honoring 11 companies for performance in consumer protection, safety, and sustainability.
Winners included Pinkoi, Momo, PChome 24h, Coupang Taiwan, and Ruten. The administration urged consumers to shop with these platforms to ensure better protection.
It also called on local businesses to prioritize selling through vetted platforms, citing their high visibility and strong reputation for secure transactions.
