TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market closed higher on Tuesday, buoyed by temporarily eased US-China tariff concerns and gains on Wall Street.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index, or TAIEX, gained 200.6 points to close at 21,330.14. Turnover totaled NT$391.2 billion (US$12.8 billion), according to CNA and CTEE.
TSMC advanced 1.25% to NT$969, tracking a 5.93% gain in its US-listed shares. MediaTek increased 3.04% to NT$1,355, while Foxconn closed 3.27% higher at NT$158.
Shipping stocks drew interest amid expectations of a near-term rise in exports to the US. Evergreen Marine gained 6.9%, Yang Ming Marine Transport advanced 7.59% on 120,000 contracts, and Wan Hai Lines ended up 4.66%.
Memory chipmakers were also in focus after Samsung and SK Hynix reportedly raised contract prices for DRAM (dynamic random access memory). These chips are widely used in desktop and mobile devices to store data temporarily.
Taiwan-based DRAM firms moved higher following the report, with Nanya Technology reaching the daily limit up with 140,000 contracts traded, while Winbond Electronics rose 8.16% on volume exceeding 200,000 contracts. Memory chipmakers Phison Electronics and Unifosa also posted gains of more than 4%
Shipping-related firms extended their gains after Russia invited Ukraine to resume direct peace talks in Turkey. Franbo Lines, Shih Wei Navigation, and Wisdom Marine Lines each rose more than 2%.
Airline shares reacted to strong April revenue reports from major carriers. Eva Air, China Airlines, and Starlux Airlines ended higher, while Tigerair Taiwan slipped 3.71% on a year-over-year revenue decline.
Taishin Securities Investment Advisory Vice President Huang Wen-ching (黃文清) said the TAIEX has filled the gap left by the April 2 US tariff-related dip. He added that with uncertainty remaining over US semiconductor tariffs, the market may transition to a slower upward trend or a consolidation phase.
