TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — WeatherRisk Director Chia Hsin-hsing (賈新興) predicts a Pacific high-pressure system will affect Taiwan over the next 10 days, leading to high temperatures and muggy weather, making plum rains unlikely during that time.
Chia said mountainous areas may experience sporadic rain later this week, but nothing like the heavy plum rains that typically occur from May to June. Chia added that summer-like conditions would be felt in most areas, with Taitung potentially experiencing localized foehn winds, which are dry downslope winds, starting from Sunday, per CNA.
"Right now, the conditions for plum rains are not very good," said Chia. He predicted that plum rains could start on May 25.
Meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) agreed that Taiwan will experience stable weather this week. He predicted hot, sunny weather with strong ultraviolet rays, per UDN.
Wu said Taiwan will also experience the radiative cooling effect, large temperature differences between day and night, ranging between 18 to 33 C in the north, 18 to 34 C in central areas, 20 to 36 C in the south, and 19 to 34 C in the east.
Wu said the Pacific high-pressure system will keep plum rains in eastern and central China. Wu predicted daytime highs of 35 C in some areas.
Aside from occasional mountain rainfall, Wu said rain was unlikely until the current weather system begins to weaken on May 23, potentially leading to the third wave of plum rains.
