TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Culture announced the annual International Museum Day on Sunday at Huashan 1914 Cultural and Creative Park.
It revealed that 50 museums across Taiwan will offer discounted or free admission during the event, along with technology-related activities. This year’s theme focuses on the “infinite possibilities of technology” to enhance the museum experience, per a press release.
The MOC said the International Council of Museums called upon all museums to reimagine their role as important connectors, innovators, and managers of cultural identity. ICOM also challenges museums to find more ways to protect intangible assets, harness the power of the youth, and promote innovative technologies.
In response, the MOC said nine museums, including the National Palace Museum and the National Museum of History, plan to launch virtual reality exhibitions and digital games for the event. By embracing immersive technology, the MOC said more museum collections will be digitized, providing greater access to cultural assets.
"I would be happy working in a museum my entire life," said Minister of Culture Lee Yuan (李遠). He said one of the first actions he undertook after taking office was a visit to museums and associated workshops, where he showed an interest in art restoration.
Lee said his ministry is promoting "100 Taiwan Culture Bases," a list of smaller, community-based art and cultural locations. The list also shows that many locations are within walking distance from each other, such as Guling Street Theater and Kishu An Forest of Literature.
“Museums should be places that welcome everyone and be interesting and fun,” Lee said, adding that young people should be reminded that they live in a land rich with culture and history whenever they enter a museum.
Taiwan National Museum of History Director Hung Shih-yuu (洪世佑) said the event will encourage more interactions with the community, as he hopes museums can be a place where youth can learn about public issues and the arts. Hung also hoped all museums could better utilize technology to preserve culture and enhance the viewer's experience.
