TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Guatemala migration director Alfredo Danilo Rivera paid his first visit to Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday.
During his May 14-18 stay, Rivera was meeting with National Immigration Agency Deputy Director Chen Chien-cheng (陳建成) to exchange views on the two countries’ migration and border control policies. Guatemala is one of Taiwan’s 12 official diplomatic allies, with relations dating back more than 90 years.
Rivera visited the agency’s Technology Investigation Center, the Taipei detention center, and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. At the last site, he showed special interest in the e-gate system and in the application of advanced technologies in immigration control, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The Guatemalan migration agency chief also found time to visit sights like Taipei 101 and the Red House Theater in the Ximending area.
Taiwan and Guatemala signed an immigration cooperation agreement to fight human trafficking in 2025. Rivera’s first official visit to Taiwan would lead to a deepening of cooperation, the ministry said.
