TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Taipei City is making rapid progress on the Tamkang Bridge, which will span the mouth of the Tamsui River and link Tamsui and Bali districts.
According to a progress report, the central support tower will be completed in July, and the Bali side of the bridge is slated to finish construction in September. After stress tests and nearby road work are completed, the city expects the Tamkang Bridge to open for public use in March 2026.
The New Taipei Public Works Department said the structure was 81.8% complete as of the end of April. Work will continue throughout the summer to finish section three of the bridge by September.
Once open, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Taoyuan International Airport and Tamsui. City planners anticipate the project will boost tourism and investment in both Bali and Tamsui, while also relieving congestion on the downriver Guandu Bridge.
To prepare for an anticipated influx of tourists, New Taipei has awarded a contract to the Yunbo Corporation to revitalize the Taipei Fisherman’s Wharf. Plans include new restaurants, commercial market spaces, entertainment options, and cultural attractions, per Storm Media.
New Taipei is also advancing the second phase of its light rail network in Tamsui. Plans call for a new light rail line running along the Tamsui River from Hongshulin Station to Fisherman’s Wharf.
By 2030, construction is expected to begin on a Bali light rail line which will cross the Tamsui River near the Tamkang Bridge to connect with the Tamsui light rail network, per CNA.
