TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Dunmu Goodwill Fleet arrived in Tuvalu on Friday for the first time in 12 years, after sailing over 7,000 kilometers.
The fleet departed on its long-range training voyage sometime at the end of March. The fleet consists of the Cheng Kung-class frigate Cheng Ho, the Kang Ding-class frigate Wu Chang, and the Pan Shi-class fast combat support ship Pan Shi. The ships are visiting Taiwan’s diplomatic allies and providing open-sea training for newly enlisted sailors and non-commissioned officers.
Upon arriving in Tuvalu, the Navy Honor Guard and Naval Academy cadets put on performances, while members of the Marine Corps martial arts team gave a demonstration for the public, Liberty Times reported. The Pan Shi warship was also opened for tours.
Taiwan’s Ambassador to Tuvalu Lin Tong-heng (林東亨) and Goodwill Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Liu Tai-jui (劉岱瑞) presented 33 ceremonial rifles and 50 volleyballs to Tuvalu on behalf of the Taiwanese government. Naval Academy cadets also played a friendly volleyball match with the Tuvaluan police.
This year’s voyage includes over 800 Navy personnel and cadets.
