TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. received military honors with a 21-gun salute at the Presidential Office on Tuesday.
Whipps is leading a delegation on a week-long state visit to Taiwan. In a speech, he lauded the longstanding friendship between Palau and Taiwan, noting their common values such as democracy, mutual respect, and the rule of law, according to the Presidential Office.
He added that in today’s world, where peace is often challenged and freedom tested, it is heartening to see people remain committed to stability and principles.
Whipps hoped that the shared values between the two nations would continue to strengthen their partnership, promote regional peace, and ensure a safer future for all.
Lai lauded the 26 years of Taiwan-Palau diplomatic relations made possible by mutual support. He thanked Whipps and the Palauan government for consistently supporting Taiwan’s international participation as it engages with the global community.
The president said he was optimistic that the two countries would continue to work together to contribute more to the world. He expected Whipps’ visit to deepen bilateral relations and yield fruitful results.
Lai and Whipps later witnessed the signing of a technical cooperation agreement and an agreement on training and exchanges for diplomatic personnel.
