TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Development Council is bringing its bilingual policy into Taiwan’s daily life, with expanded efforts targeting night markets and small businesses.
At a press event Tuesday, the NDC said the initiative supports President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) pledge to boost global competitiveness and build a more livable, internationally connected Taiwan. It also aligns with broader goals to attract and retain foreign professionals, per CNA.
As tourist traffic surges in local shopping areas, the NDC is expanding bilingual upgrades to night markets. The goal is to establish a scalable model that can be replicated nationwide.
The NDC cited Ningxia Night Market in Taipei as a leading example. Vendors sought help to improve English communication, prompting the government to offer AI tools and training resources for translating menus and enhancing basic English skills.
Meanwhile, progress has already been made in public transport, websites, and official documents. The next phase will focus on integrating English into public services and local events to foster immersive bilingual environments.
One highlight is the “Taitung Chishang bilingual plan," which will combine digital nomad-friendly services with local cultural elements. Bilingual markets celebrating Hakka and Indigenous culture will run from June through August, followed by guided tours in English later this year.
Looking ahead, the NDC will continue working with ministries, local governments, and civil society to expand bilingual-friendly environments to attract 400,000 skilled professionals from overseas.
