TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's government has officially declared the observance of three new public national holidays this year: Confucius' Birthday, Retrocession Day, and Constitution Day.
The Presidential Office issued a presidential decree on Wednesday promulgating the Act on the Implementation of Commemorative and Festival Holidays. It adds four new public holidays in total, and designates Labor Day as a nationwide public holiday, per CNA.
Since the official government work calendar for this year has already been released, the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration said it will reissue the year’s work calendar based on the newly passed act. This will be used as the basis for planning next year’s calendar.
Previously, these holidays were administrative orders under the Implementation Measures for Memorial Days and Holidays. With the Legislative Yuan recently passing the new act in its third reading, the number of public holidays in a full calendar year will increase by five days.
The new holidays include:
- Little Lunar New Year’s Eve (the day before Lunar New Year’s Eve)
- Labor Day (May 1)
- Confucius' Birthday (Sept. 28)
- Retrocession Day, Battle of Guningtou (Oct. 25)
- Constitution Day (Dec. 25)
