TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Telecom is the first company in Taiwan to receive a commercial license to operate fixed low Earth orbit satellite communications using OneWeb technology.
The license, approved on Tuesday, opens the door for Chunghwa to provide satellite-based services to government clients and a broad range of industries, per a press release. The company said the move marks a major step toward building a resilient, multi-orbit communications infrastructure, per CNA.
Chunghwa said it began the application process in December 2023 and cleared multiple regulatory hurdles, including frequency approvals, operations plan reviews, and telecom compliance. The license affirms its readiness to deliver next-generation satellite services, it added.
“This milestone proves our capability and commitment to advancing satellite communications in Taiwan,” said Chia Chung-yung (賈仲雍), head of the company’s Network Technology Group. “This achievement highlights our satellite network capabilities and reaffirms our strong commitment to advancing Taiwan’s satellite communications.”
Chunghwa Chair Chien Chih-cheng (簡志誠) said the company will continue investing in high and low-orbit satellite networks to strengthen Taiwan’s space and terrestrial infrastructure. The goal, he said, is to offer secure backup services for both public agencies and private enterprises.
The company added that its long-term plan is to enhance network resilience and boost Taiwan’s autonomy in global satellite communications.
