TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Three Taiwanese were arrested by Thai police after arriving at Suvarnabhumi International Airport earlier this week.
The men are reportedly part of a fraud ring and all have criminal records in Taiwan related to fraud. The men were questioned and arrested after Thai officials discovered 19 smartphones in their carry-on luggage on Tuesday, reported UDN.
Police discovered the phones are connected to online scam operations that target Thai nationals. Police matched bank accounts connected on the phones to numerous complaints filed by Thai citizens in recent months, reported Thaiger.
The men are being detained by the Thai Immigration Bureau. None of the suspects names have been released by authorities and this was the first time the men had attempted to enter Thailand.
Thai authorities will interrogate the men and review evidence to track down others involved in the scam operations. Taiwan’s National Police Agency is reportedly working with Thai police to assist with tracking the flow of international funds to Taiwanese accounts, per UDN.
