TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) said Monday that the party will oppose the DPP recall efforts but has not discussed any detailed plans with KMT Chair Eric Chu (朱立倫).
He said that while there have been no talks with Chu on next steps, the TPP will not stand by as the DPP pursues what he called an “anti-democratic campaign” through the recall process, per Tai Sounds. He accused the ruling party of undermining Taiwan’s democracy by weaponizing recalls.
The KMT may need TPP support to protect vulnerable lawmakers in the upcoming recall elections, with legislators Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) and Hsu Chiao-hsin (徐巧芯) potentially depending on cooperation, per UDN. TPP insiders told UDN that recent behavior by TPP Taipei City Council members suggests a willingness to work with the KMT.
However, others within the party warned against closer ties, citing fears of being absorbed or overshadowed by the larger opposition party. Wang, in a Sunday interview, confirmed that cooperation at the local level is already happening, per ETtoday.
Meanwhile, Clarence Wu (吳崑玉), former People First Party spokesperson and political commentator, argued that the TPP is siphoning support from the KMT under the guise of unity, per NOWNews. Wu suggested that while KMT legislators are aware of the risks of working with Huang, they feel cornered due to what he called “poor leadership” within the KMT.
The People First Party was founded by former KMT heavyweight James Soong (宋楚瑜). It is considered a KMT-leaning party.
