TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A falling tree at Taichung’s Feng Chia University on Friday resulted in the death of one university student.
The large banyan tree near the school’s main gate fell onto several students at around 5:03 p.m., injuring four. One male student was knocked unconscious and could not be revived, reported UDN.
Bystanders and firefighters responded quickly to help free the students trapped by the tree’s branches. The injured male student was transported to the Chung Kang Branch of Cheng Ching Hospital and arrived by 5:28 p.m., reported CNA.
The male student’s injuries were severe and doctors declared him dead shortly after arrival. A female student who suffered minor cuts and bruises was also sent to the hospital for medical treatment.
The cause of the tree’s collapse is under investigation. Friday was rainy day and the tree was reportedly over 60 years old. It was planted on a wide avenue leading from the school's gate, which sees a high amount of foot traffic every day.
Feng Chia University said it was deeply saddened by the accident, and pledged to provide the family with all necessary support, including funeral arrangements and psychological counseling, per UDN.
The school will also launch a safety check of all trees on campus to ensure that no similar incident happens again.
