TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A police inspection found 35.11 kilograms of ketamine in the luggage of a woman arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport from Europe, reports said Wednesday.
The discovery was made early in the morning on April 9, per CNA. An X-ray check of luggage at Terminal 2 revealed the presence of the drug in two items of luggage carried by a Canadian woman.
The suspect, 33, said she was a tourist on her first visit to Taiwan. The drugs syndicate had offered her a free flight, free hotel stay, and 1,000 Canadian dollars (NT$21,600, US$732) in pocket money, the Aviation Police Bureau said.
The woman had first traveled from Canada to Vienna, Austria, before boarding a flight to Taiwan. She was traveling alone and had nobody at the airport waiting to pick up the drugs, police said.
The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office charged her with breaking drugs laws, carrying a minimum prison sentence of seven years for smuggling class-3 drugs.
