TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Betting markets are increasingly favoring the success of the recall campaign targeting KMT legislators, with the baseline wager now set at the KMT losing 10 seats.
Up Media reported Tuesday that when the recall effort entered its second phase in February, the initial betting line was whether the KMT would lose more or fewer than five seats. As the campaign progressed, the line was gradually raised, reflecting growing expectations that the KMT would lose ground.
The market adjustment followed the KMT’s failed recall attempts against two DPP legislators in Taipei, raising the betting line to 10 seats. Up Media said the rising betting line suggests diminishing confidence in the KMT’s ability to retain its seats.
Despite recent polling showing declining public support for the recall effort, enthusiasm among recall supporters appears strong. A Monday poll by the Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation indicated that while a majority opposes the recalls, pro-recall voters are significantly more motivated to participate.
This trend is supported by a Wednesday Mirror Media poll focusing on the five Taipei KMT legislators facing recall. The poll showed that although most legislators, excluding Hsu Chiao-hsin (徐巧芯), maintain net positive approval ratings among the general public, support drops when polling is narrowed to most likely voters.
Former KMT Legislator Apollo Chen (陳學聖) has urged the party’s supporters to turn out in support of incumbents facing recall pressure, warning that failure to mobilize could result in preventable losses, per ETtoday.
The KMT is set to hold its first major anti-recall rally on June 21 at Rongxing Garden Park, per UDN. The event will feature all Taipei KMT legislators, KMT Chair Eric Chu (朱立倫), and several lawmakers from Keelung and New Taipei.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) will not attend due to a scheduling conflict. Taiwanese internet personality Holger Chen (陳之漢), who recently returned from China, is scheduled to participate.
