TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — DPP Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) announced Wednesday that the party will officially support ongoing recall efforts targeting KMT lawmakers, beginning with a series of promotional initiatives to launch June 23.
The campaign will include billboards, websites, and videos that emphasize the alleged pro-China positions of targeted KMT legislators, per Tai Sounds. Lin said the DPP will also initiate a nationwide door-knocking campaign on June 21 to rally public support.
More than 200 billboards are expected to go up across Taiwan starting June 23. Lin added that campaign websites will detail the lawmakers' past actions, warn of cognitive warfare from China, dispel misinformation, and list ongoing activities for the DPP and recall groups.
The messaging will focus on two main themes: that voting in favor of the recalls is an act of resistance against the CCP, and that the lawmakers in question have demonstrated disloyalty to Taiwan and jeopardized its national security.
While the DPP had previously characterized the recall drives as grassroots-led, it has now entered the campaign more openly. On Saturday, DPP legislative caucus convener Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) said he personally initiated the recall push, per NOWnews.
The party maintains that it is playing a supporting role. However, its involvement appears to be increasing following a June 12 meeting between President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and United Microelectronics Corporation founder Robert Tsao (曹興誠), a key backer of the recall movement, per UP Media. Tsao reportedly urged the DPP to take a more active role as the campaign nears its final stage.
Tsao said the party had previously kept a low profile to avoid appearing too confrontational. He now believes stronger engagement is warranted.
The KMT has criticized the DPP’s move. On Monday, party media figure Jaw Shaw-kong (趙少康) accused the DPP of sending mixed signals, per NOWnews. He noted that while President Lai has called for increased cross-party dialogue, Ker is simultaneously advancing the recall effort.
Jaw also alleged that Ker began organizing the campaign as early as Jan. 15, 2024. The KMT has launched “Operation Patriot” to defend its legislative seats, following its own unsuccessful attempt to recall DPP lawmakers.
