TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Prosecutors have launched investigations into Hsinchu City’s KMT Legislator Cheng Cheng-chien (鄭正鈐) after allegations he accepted campaign funding from China, reports said Friday.
Organizers of a recall effort against Cheng also accused him of leaking confidential information to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, the Liberty Times reported. The Taiwan High Prosecutors Office and the Taipei District Prosecutors Office said Friday they had opened investigations into the opposition politician for breaking the National Security Act.
An aide reportedly also alleged that Cheng had demanded businesses pay assistants’ expenses in return for helping out with government contracts. He allegedly also misreported aides’ salaries and political funding. The recall campaigners reported the issues to prosecutors on Wednesday.
The Taiwan High Prosecutors Office will investigate allegations that Cheng accepted funds from China and that he had an aide pass government documents by phone to the Taiwan Affairs Office. The accusations related to corruption and criminal law will be handled by Taipei prosecutors.
