TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Authorities in Miaoli discovered a warehouse filled illegal game and possibly meat from stray cats and dogs.
Following reports that foreign workers were being supplied with illegal dog meat, Miaoli Agricultural Department launched the investigation. After more than six months of gathering evidence, agents looked at a warehouse outside Toufen City on Wednesday, reported CNA.
Police officers and agents from the Miaoli Animal Care and Health Office discovered over 800 kilograms of meat from various animals stored in six large freezers. In addition to wild game like boar, muntjac, and sambar deer, suspected dog and cat meat was also found.
Over more than six months, investigators reportedly observed foreign workers from Vietnam frequenting the mountainous area near Shanzhu Lake.
The owner of the property cooperated with investigators and provided access to the warehouse, per CNA. After discovering large amounts of unidentified game meat last year, the owner reportedly contacted an animal rescue association in Hsinchu, which helped Miaoli authorities in their investigation.
Most of the frozen meat will be kept temporarily by the Miaoli government for evidence in the case. Around 6 kg of suspected dog meat will be tested by the Animal Care and Health Office to confirm the species and potential origin.
The case is still ongoing and no arrests have been made. According to the warehouse owner, the foreign workers who rented the space and began storing the meat there have already left Taiwan.
