TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Recall votes for 24 KMT lawmakers and for suspended Hsinchu City Mayor Kao Hung-an (高虹安) will take place on July 26, the Central Election Commission said Friday.
The list of lawmakers facing recall votes includes KMT Caucus Whip Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) in Hualien, five lawmakers in Taipei, five in New Taipei, and six in Taoyuan, the Liberty Times reported. Kao, who was elected for the TPP in 2022, was suspended from office in July 2024 following corruption allegations.
A recall vote can only be successful if it receives more votes in favor than against, and if the votes in favor of the recall number more than 25% of the eligible voters in the election district. If the recall fails, then the lawmaker in question can sit out the rest of his term until the end of January 2028 without any new recall votes.
Friday’s announcement was only the first batch of recalls, as campaigns against other lawmakers are continuing. Efforts by the KMT to launch recalls of several DPP legislators have been marred by accusations of fraud, with local KMT officials facing detention and legal charges.
In the present Legislative Yuan, the KMT is the largest party with 52 seats, while the DPP holds 51 and the TPP eight seats.
