TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s National Fire Agency celebrated the 30 year anniversary of its founding with a ceremony in Nantou County on Friday.
The occasion marked the opening of the upgraded National Fire Agency Training Center in Nantou which will greatly enhance fire-fighting capabilities and disaster preparedness for Taiwan’s firefighters, reported CNA. The ceremony was attended by President Lai Ching-te, Minister of the Interior Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳), and National Fire Agency Director Hsiao Huan-chang (蕭煥章).
The newly upgraded training center is reportedly the largest firefighter training center in Asia, and the third largest in the world, according to a press release. During his remarks, Lai said he envisions the training center as a major hub for disaster response training for the entire Indo-Pacific region.
Lai said the Cabinet has drafted a 24-point plan to increase resources and improve the training program for the National Fire Agency. The plan includes a budget of NT$28.5 billion (US$965 million) to subsidize local fire departments.
The funds will be used for purchasing new vehicles and equipment, upgrading existing fire department buildings and facilities, as well as introducing smart systems.
In his speech, Lai said Taiwan’s firefighters have earned the respect and admiration of the public. They serve as the crucial heart of the country’s disaster response and prevention system, he said.
