TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taipei city councilor filed a police report Saturday after she was harassed online in an attempted blackmail case.
Democratic Progressive Party Councilor Lin Liang-chun (林亮君) reported the case to police in Taipei’s Zhongshan District, who promptly launched an investigation, per UDN. The alleged blackmailer contacted Lin via social media and demanded money in exchange for not releasing nude photographs.
According to reports, a Facebook profile under the name Chung Sheng-yi (鐘聖義) messaged Lin and claimed to possess indecent images of her. The user demanded US$50,000 (NT$1.5 million), threatening to release the images if payment was not made.
In a public statement on Facebook, Lin shared a photo of the police report. She said that any images or video appearing to feature her are fake and likely generated using AI tools.
Police analyzed the suspect’s messages and determined the user’s IP address was located overseas, despite claims of being in Taiwan.
In her response, Lin expressed concern about the ease with which people can be defamed using fabricated media. She said the rapid advancement of AI technology poses a growing threat to women and called for greater public awareness of the issue.
The police investigation is ongoing. Authorities said the suspect could face charges of intimidation if identified and apprehended.
