TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A former member of the Coast Guard Administration was indicted for supplying China with information about missions near the Philippines and about missiles, reports said Wednesday.
When still serving with the Coast Guard, the officer surnamed Lee (李) accepted NT$60,000 (US$2,000) per quarter and a year-end bonus in return for providing China with the secrets. The Taiwan High Prosecutors Office in Kaohsiung indicted him for breaking the National Security Act, per CNA.
Lee started working for a Chinese agent calling himself “Tony” in September 2022. The spy was mostly interested in Coast Guard ship movements between Taiwan and the Philippines, and in maps of warning areas for missile firings.
Military police and prosecutors launched raids against four locations on Sept. 10 and Sept. 15. After being interrogated, Lee resigned from the Coast Guard. Prosecutors also reviewed transactions related to his bank and cryptocurrency accounts before completing their investigation Tuesday.
