TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pro-recall groups and the KMT are preparing for rival demonstrations on July 5, with motorcycle convoys and rallies set to take place in Taipei and New Taipei.
Organizers from recall groups announced Wednesday that they will hold two motorcycle convoys, one in each city, which will converge near Jingmei MRT Station before heading to a rally site on Jinan Road, per CNA. The routes for each convoy will be announced by local organizers, who urged participants to obey traffic laws and assured that provisions will be available for those joining the event.
Robert Tsao (曹興誠), founder of United Microelectronics Corporation and a vocal supporter of the recall effort, said the initiative stems from what he called the KMT’s betrayal of Taiwan. He framed the campaign as a defense of Taiwan’s sovereignty and a stand against Chinese aggression.
The KMT said Thursday it will host an anti-recall rally the same day at Taipei City Hall Square, per Tai Sounds. Attendees will include Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜), and Taoyuan Mayor Simon Chang (張善政), while Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) is expected to be absent.
The KMT accused the government of abusing the recall mechanism to undermine the opposition, calling the ongoing campaign politically motivated. TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) also announced his participation in the KMT rally, along with other TPP officials.
The Central Election Commission issued guidelines Thursday, stating that recall-related activities may take place until July 26, per Tai Sounds. However, the reporting, analysis, or distribution of public opinion polls is banned during the 10 days leading up to the vote.
Additionally, the CEC specified that from July 16 to 25, no recall activities may be conducted before 7 a.m. or after 10 p.m.
