TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Telecom said Friday it completed full repairs on Taiwan-Matsu No. 2 cable, restoring dual cable redundancy between the Taiwan proper and Matsu.
The telecom explained that the cable had suffered two full core breaks: one 1.6 kilometers off the Shalun station on May 16, and another 127.7 kilometers off Dongyin on June 16, per CNA.
Chunghwa Telecom rerouted traffic through the third Taiwan-Matsu cable and used microwave transmission as a secondary backup to maintain normal service.
Repairs to the Shalun-side break began on June 18 once weather conditions allowed safe deployment of a platform work vessel in the shallow, six-meter-deep waters. The fix was completed by June 26.
For the deeper-sea break off Dongyin, Chunghwa coordinated the South East Asia and Indian Ocean Cable Maintenance Agreement, a regional cable maintenance alliance, to dispatch a specialized repair vessel, which arrived on June 25.
With both breaks now fixed, Chunghwa says full dual-route backup is operational again, bolstering the resilience of Matsu’s communications infrastructure, per Liberty Times. The company thanked government agencies and local fishing associations for their support in repairs.
