TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — As Typhoon Danas approaches, the Coast Guard reminds the public that failure to heed instructions to leave coastal areas during a typhoon will result in a fine between NT$50,000 and NT$250,000 (US$1,700-US$8,650) according to the Disaster Prevention and Protection Act.
The Coast Guard said it has stepped up patrols of coastal areas to prevent people from watching waves at the beach or engaging in dangerous water activities such as surfing. Shore patrols will ask people to leave with loudspeakers and whistles and block access to coastal areas, per SETN.
Should the public violate or enter such areas without permission, the Coast Guard will report the matter to the local government to issue a fine. The Coast Guard reiterates that the purpose of enforcing such regulations is for public safety.
The public is encouraged to use the online resource GoOcean to check the latest status for beach closures as well as other data such as wave height, wind speed, ocean swells, and high tides. The platform integrates real-time data across different departments to provide the public with a clear view of sea conditions to ensure safety.
Should anyone encounter an emergency while engaging in marine activities, please call the Coast Guard reporting hotline at 118. After receiving the report, the Coast Guard Administration will dispatch appropriate manpower and equipment.
