TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Danas has inflicted an estimated NT$257.16 million (US$8.86 million) in agricultural damage with pomelos taking the hardest hit, the Ministry of Agriculture said Monday.
The ministry said in a press release that agricultural and equipment losses were heaviest in central and southern Taiwan, per CNA. Information was compiled from the Agriculture and Food Agency and the Department of Animal Industry.
Tainan alone accounted for 82% of total losses, followed by Chiayi County with NT$22.3 million, Yunlin County with NT$20.83 million, and Nantou County with NT$2.7 million. Altogether, 3,328 hectares of crops were affected with about 952 hectares of lost harvest.
Pomelos were the worst hit with 800 hectares damaged and a 50% loss rate, wiping out 400 hectares of production worth NT$118.4 million. Longan, ponkan tangerines, sweet corn, and bananas also suffered millions in damage.
The ministry noted that the livestock sector recorded about NT$2.35 million in losses, mainly involving chickens, while damage to agricultural facilities reached NT$16.9 million, including destroyed trellises, greenhouses, and livestock housing.
Typhoon Danas made landfall in Chiayi County on Sunday before tracking northward and exiting near Taoyuan and Hsinchu on Monday. Over 300 people have been injured with two deaths reported in Tainan.
