TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A statue of the protection deity Nezha was blown off its pedestal during Typhoon Danas.
Danas swept through Tainan's Xinying District Sunday night, downing street signs and trees throughout the area. The statue, located in a park behind Xinying Taizi Temple, was knocked over by the storm, per Liberty Times.
The statue, also known as “The Third Prince” or “Marshal of the Central Altar," was installed in 2005. It was created from a fiberglass mold by the temple before the city-county merger for the Taiwan Lantern Festival, per UDN.
The temple's main symbol, a 21-meter-tall, 12-tonne copper statue of Nezha installed in 1990, was unharmed. Perched 81 meters above ground and illuminated at night, it has become a prominent landmark in Xinying District.
