TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s stock market ended lower on Tuesday as investor sentiment was weighed down by uncertainty surrounding US tariffs that could affect Taiwan.
The Taiwan Capitalization Weighted Stock Index (TAIEX) fell 66.45 points to close at 22,362.27. Turnover totaled NT$272 billion (US$9.3 billion), according to CNA and CTEE.
TSMC traded lower for most of the session but recovered by the end of trading, closing unchanged at NT$1,030. Foxconn dropped 1.24% to NT$159, and MediaTek edged down 0.78% to NT$1,270.
Semiconductor test interface supplier WinWay Technology was the day’s weaker performer, hitting the daily limit down at NT$1,125. The company reported June revenue of NT$376 million, marking a 22.92% monthly decline and a 12.44% drop from the previous year, its lowest monthly figure in 13 months.
The test interface generally refers to key components such as probe cards, sockets, and substrates that connect wafers to testing equipment. Although its global market is estimated to be significantly smaller than those of wafer foundries, packaging, testing, or equipment sectors, it remains an essential cog in the AI supply chain.
Financial shares provided some support for the broader market, boosted by a strengthening Taiwan dollar. IBF Financial Holdings hit the daily limit for the second consecutive session, closing at NT$17.25. Yuanta Financial, Mega Financial, and Taishin Financial each posted gains close to 1%.
Information service providers outperformed. Dimension Computer Technology hit the daily limit, while Fortune Information Systems, Zero One Technology, and Metaage advanced more than 5%.
The printed circuit board and copper-clad laminate sectors also saw notable gains. Elite Material and Gold Circuit Electronics rose more than 5%, while Global Brands Manufacture, First Hi-tec Enterprise, Topoint Technology, Iteq, and Taiwan Union Technology all ended higher.
Printed circuit boards are built with intricate copper pathways that connect components and form the foundation of most electronic circuits. Copper-clad laminates provide the structural backbone of PCBs, forming conductive layers that enable electrical connectivity between components.
Cathay Securities Investment Consulting manager Tsai Ming-han (蔡明翰) said the newly announced US tariffs targeting 14 countries are unlikely to have an immediate impact, as rates remain largely unchanged from April. He viewed the move as a push to restart trade talks, as the tariffs are set to take effect on Aug. 1.
Tsai noted that Taiwan’s tariff status may be announced soon. If Taiwan follows the UK and Vietnam in securing a deal with the US, it could help ease market uncertainty.
