TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport rose to the 13th busiest in the world in 2024.
The Airports Council International, ACI, released its latest report on Tuesday, ranking the world’s busiest airports based on data from over 2,800 airports across 185 countries and regions, per Liberty Times. The rankings, which analyze passenger traffic, cargo volume, and aircraft movements, found that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was the world’s busiest airport in 2024, with 108.1 million passengers.
However, when counting only international passengers, Dubai International Airport topped the list, handling 92.3 million travelers. Taoyuan Airport also performed strongly, ranking 13th globally for international passenger volume with 44.7 million travelers.
Global air passenger numbers reached a record high of 9.4 billion in 2024, an 8.4% increase from 2023 and 2.7% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The top 20 busiest airports alone accounted for 1.54 billion passengers, representing 16% of the global total.
Although Taoyuan Airport’s international traffic remains 7.5% below 2019 levels, it rose 27% from 2023 numbers. This growth pushed the airport from 15th to 13th place in the global rankings.
ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci said, “These rankings reflect the scale of global aviation and the resilience of the industry that continues to grow, despite the complex global environment."
