TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – During a fundraiser for his election campaign last year, US President Donald Trump said he told Chinese leader Xi Jinping he would bomb Beijing if China attacked Taiwan, CNN reported Tuesday.
The remark was part of a report by the US media about audio tapes with recordings from fundraisers obtained by authors Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf for a new book, “2024.”
During a private meeting with donors, Trump allegedly said he had once told Russian President Vladimir Putin that he would bomb Moscow if Russia invaded Ukraine.
Trump later gave similar warnings to Xi, CNN reported. In the case of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, Trump reportedly told Xi the US would bomb Beijing in response. He said the Chinese leader thought he was crazy, while noting that he and Xi never had a problem.
The Trump campaign did not comment on the content of the tapes, CNN reported. His comments were aimed to persuade potential donors that he would be better at preventing international conflicts than then-President Joe Biden.
