TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pope Leo XIV has offered prayers and aid for victims of Typhoon Danas in Taiwan, prompting a message of gratitude from President Lai Ching-te (賴清德).
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, on Wednesday said the Pope was informed of the casualties and damage in Taiwan caused by the typhoon, per CNA. He is praying for those affected and directed the Office of Papal Almonry “to provide concrete help to the population.”
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍), on behalf of Lai, expressed sincere gratitude to the Pontiff for “offering prayers for those affected in the spirit of God’s love for all people.” The ministry pledged to continue to cooperate with the Pope in advancing humanitarian aid and charitable services.
Taiwan's Embassy to the Holy See on Thursday said that it is the first time since Pope Leo XIV took office that he has publicly expressed concern over a natural disaster in Taiwan. It thanked the pope for his compassion and encouragement.
