TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and the US are in talks about cooperating on a spaceport, American Institute in Taiwan said on Monday.
The project could “enable suborbital flights that reduce travel time between Taipei and Houston to just 2.5 hours,” AIT said in a Facebook post. It said Ellington Airport in Houston already has a licensed spaceport.
Meanwhile, Taiwan has selected Jiupeng in Pingtung as the site for its space mission launch facility, which could be upgraded into a spaceport.
AIT said it facilitated “preliminary exchanges” with Taiwanese agencies to assess the project’s feasibility. Cooperation would likely first focus on uncrewed cargo missions and later involve manned flights, it said.
“This initiative not only highlights Taiwan’s growing potential in space innovation, but also marks another milestone in strengthening US–Taiwan technological partnership,” AIT added.
Houston Spaceport is home to various endeavors, including aerospace manufacturing and education, low Earth orbit, and lunar mission activities, according to its website.
