TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Lee Wen-tsung (李文宗), the finance manager of former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je’s (柯文哲) 2024 presidential campaign, left detention Wednesday after paying bail set at NT$20 million (US$681,300).
Lee was one of 11 people charged with corruption for helping the developer expand the floor area ratio of the Core Pacific City project in return for bribes. The Taipei District Court first ordered Lee detained in January, with his detention extended several times until Aug. 1.
If Lee had been unable to come up with bail money by that date, he would have had to spend a further two months in detention, per CNA. The court decided he will have to wear an ankle monitor, and barred him from traveling overseas, sailing out to sea, or moving home.
The project developer accused of paying the bribes, Core Pacific Chair Sheen Ching-jing (沈慶京), will also be allowed out if he can pay NT$180 million, down from the NT$200 million set by a previous court decision. At least NT$100 million will have to come out of his own pocket, and be paid by Aug. 1.
Lee and Sheen are also barred from contacting, harassing, threatening, and questioning other defendants, suspects, and witnesses in the case. Ko and another defendant, KMT Taipei City Councilor Angela Ying (應曉薇), had their detention extended by two months starting Aug. 2.
