TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pegatron Chair Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) on Thursday released receipts documenting donations made to Hualien following the 2018 and 2024 earthquakes, pushing back against the Hualien County Government’s challenge to his recent allegations.
Tung claimed Tuesday that when planning to donate after the 2024 earthquake, he was warned the Hualien County Government would misappropriate the funds and later claim the donations had come from the county magistrate’s office, per Storm Media. He said he confirmed the allegation after consulting multiple sources.
He also accused the county government of pressuring a local elementary school not to accept direct aid from Taipei, insisting that assistance be routed through the county government.
In response, Kuomintang legislative caucus convener Fu Kun-chi (傅崐萁) and his wife, Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-wei (徐榛蔚), filed slander charges against Tung on Thursday, per CNA. KMT spokesperson Wu Chien-chih (吳建志) called on Tung to provide concrete evidence.
Tung responded by publishing records showing he and Pegatron donated nearly NT$100 million (US$3.4 million) to local institutions and relief organizations between the two major quakes, per UDN. He accused Fu of trying to muddy the waters by shifting the dispute to the courtroom.
According to Democratic Progressive Party insiders quoted by Newtalk, dissatisfaction with Fu’s political conduct is growing in Hualien. Political operatives in the region are reportedly encountering frustration among local brokers and voters, who view Fu and Hsu’s actions as heavy-handed.
A local insider added that attendance at recent rallies in Hualien, including one attended by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) in support of Fu, was lower than expected — possibly signaling eroding support. The insider suggested that with backing from the DPP base, young voters, some moderate KMT supporters, and anti-Fu constituents, the odds of a successful recall campaign could be favorable.
