TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Amazon Web Services began its two-day Taiwan summit on Tuesday, with Managing Director for Hong Kong and Taiwan Wang Ding-kai (王定愷) emphasizing the crucial role of cloud services, per CNA.
“We believe there is no AI without the cloud. If the network is turned off, many generative AI tools cannot be used; without the support of the cloud, the capabilities of edge computing will be very limited,” Wang said.
Day one of the summit covered topics such as generative AI, machine learning, data analysis, cloud infrastructure, migration, information security, and industry applications across the Asia-Pacific region.
In his opening speech, Wang said many companies are racing to develop generative AI — tools that create content such as images, music, or video in response to user prompts. He advised companies to first establish effective business models before investing in costly equipment, which carries significant amortization risks.
Wang noted that AWS has worked with AI chip giant Nvidia for 14 years, using servers such as the GB200 to build AI infrastructure that enables faster model inference and more effective AI agent applications.
He added that Amazon now uses automation to manage one million robots in its warehouses worldwide. By integrating generative AI, the company aims to achieve full service automation while reducing power consumption and carbon emissions.
Another major initiative, Wang said, is Amazon’s low-Earth orbit satellite project. After each launch, satellites must find their orbit, deploy solar panels, and establish ground communications. The company plans to launch 3,232 satellites over the next six years to build a global wireless broadband network.
