TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan did not notify the US about any travel plans for President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Tuesday.
Responding to media reports that former President Donald Trump denied Lai’s request for a US transit, Bruce said the trip was “a hypothetical at this point.” She added, “There were no plans for Lai, and as a result, nothing canceled.”
She emphasized that “transits by high-level Taiwan officials, including presidents, are fully consistent with our longstanding policy and practice.” Bruce reaffirmed the US “one China” policy, which is based on the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances.
“The United States is committed to preserving peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” she said.
The Presidential Office on Monday said Lai will remain in Taiwan to oversee post-typhoon recovery efforts and conduct tariff negotiations with the US Lai had originally planned to visit Paraguay, Belize, and Guatemala in August.
However, The Financial Times cited sources as saying the trip was canceled because the Trump administration rejected Lai’s request to transit in New York.
US Representative Nancy Pelosi criticized the decision, calling it “a dangerous signal” and warning that it suggests the US “can be bullied into silence when it comes to Taiwan.”
